Meet The Doctor

Dr. Kaitlyn Boyer, PT, DPT

I understand athletes. I understand injuries. I understand twirlers. And I understand what it takes to train at an elite level.

My name is Kaitlyn or as everyone called me in Physical Therapy School, Twirlz. I received my Bachelor of Science degree at Virginia Tech where I was the Feature Twirler for 4 years and the student athletic trainer for the Men’s Basketball Team for 2 years. I then attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where I earned my Doctorate of Physical Therapy. I am currently studying to take my certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) exam and will be starting my orthopedic physical therapy residency at Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute in Houston, TX next August to earn my OCS.

I started twirling at the age of 10 with the Dynamics Dance Twirl Teams (guess what, my grandma is the owner.) Throughout my twirling career, I had many accomplishments including attending 4 World Championships and receiving 2 Gold medals and one Silver medal in individual and team events. Unfortunately, the road to success was not always easy, as I suffered several twirling injuries including horrible low back pain and a few hamstring tears. When injured, I often worked with Physical Therapists. Sadly, they never truly understood twirling, so they didn’t understand what was necessary to fix the problem and prevent further injury.

It was during my clinical rotations in PT school when I discovered the true importance of sports specific rehab. Every sport requires different body mechanics, so it truly takes an expert in the field to understand what movement is required to heal and strengthen an athlete. After graduation, everyone starting calling me Dr. Twirlz…and that is where this all began!

Welcome to the FIRST BATON TWIRLING injury prevention and rehab website! My extensive background and work with athletes, elite level twirlers, injuries, and the best sports physical therapists in the field, allows me to understand how to best work with you to prevent injuries! I have experience treating numerous high school, college, and professional athletes in different sports as well as national and world champion baton twirlers.

My passion is to reduce and prevent injuries specifically for baton twirlers, and so far, I have had a lot of success! By examining your weakness like muscle imbalances and compensations and examining your technique of movements like illusions, leaps, and aerials, I can best guide you to prevent injury and improve your technique with certain twirling specific moves.

Let’s put a stop to Twirling Injuries!
